Publications

IUGS publications include Episodes , a quarterly news and science journal, and a former series of monographs, listed below, resulting from IUGS scientifc activities. Significant results of IUGS scientific work also appear regularly in a wide variety of disciplinary journals and books published by scholarly professional societies and for-profit enterprises. Under the terms of a 2003 agreement, the Geological Society of London will now publish book-length works arising from the work of IUGS, including IGCP projects.

Episodes covers developments of regional and global importance in  the earth sciences and is distributed worldwide to scientists in more than 150 countries. Articles contributed to Episodes are innovative and of interest to a broad audience of professional scientists having diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Articles include current reviews, new results from research projects of more than local significance, and discussion of the  infrastructure of science -- techniques, research programs, organizations,  science policy, or technical assistance. It offers geoscientists;

  • authoritative articles that reflect worldwide research advances and evolving  trends in geoscience disciplines;
  • a forum for information exchange within the global earth-science community;
  • book reviews by experts in your field;
  • news about activities sponsored by IUGS and its affiliates;
  • a comprehensive calendar of future international geoscience events and training opportunities; and
  • concise reports concerning results of international meetings, conferences, and symposia.
Back Issues of Episodes are available up to 1998

Episodes welcomes thoughtful contributions in the topical areas listed above. Please consult Guidance for Contributers, or the Episodes Website. Direct further inquires concerning preparation and submittal of manuscripts and illustrations, special requirements, and pre-press processing to the Episodes staff or to the Editor, Prof. Zhang Hongren, at the following address.

Monographs in the IUGS Publication Series

The IUGS no longer prints, sells, or distributes monographic publications. In April 2003, the IUGS entered into an agreement with the Geological Society of London to conduct a joint publication progam. Under this agreement, the Society undertakes to publish and market book-length works coming from IUGS Commissions and other Union scientific bodies.

The following list of IUGS monographs is maintained for historical purposes only. At this time, none are available for sale by the IUGS; as noted, some may be available from other sources. Most can be found in the earth-science libraries of major academic institutions and government agencies (e.g. national geological surveys). Researchers and others who desire access to these publications are encouraged to consult GEOREF, a bibliographic database established and managed by the American Geological Institute that provides access to the geoscience literature of the world and also includes document delivery services.
