Membership

IUGS Membership is open to all countries or defined regions. It is organised at the national level and in some places at regional level as approved by the IUGS Council. The IUGS Adhering Organizations are typically peak professional or government bodies such as Geological Societies, National Academies of Sciences, National Geoscience Committees, National Research Foundations, Geological Surveys or Ministries. The Adhering Members hold the proper authority from those individual countries or defined geographical regions. Active Adhering Members are represented by their nominated delegates that form the IUGS Council, which is the Union's governing body.

Adhering members pay an annual fee according to a financial contribution unit established by the Council. The Executive Committee adjusts it based on the inflation rate. The request for payment of the annual membership fee is usually sent out by the IUGS Treasurer in the first quarter of each year, after review by the Executive Committee.

Membership fees are used to support research projects and related activities of various constituent groups (Commissions, Task Groups, Initiatives, Joint Programs of the Union) by funding applications to IUGS and IGCP. Additionally, the fees are used to support several awards, including the Hutchison Fund Travel Award, the Émile Argand Award, the James M. Harrison Award, the Early Career Award, and the Scientific Awards of Excellence.
