Époques in Auvergne — 250 years ago: Nicolas Desmarest's field examination of Auvergne volcanic products yields three distinct epochs, 1775


On 15 November 1775, at the autumn public assembly of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris, Nicolas Desmarest (1725–1815) presented an account of some results from his field researches amidst the extinct volcanoes of Auvergne, in south-central France. It was the first report in which he placed special emphasis on historical interpretation of the province's volcanic productions.
