Preparations for the IUGS Executive Committee Meeting in January 2026, in Bogotá, Colombia

On 29 September, Prof. Yamirka Rojas-Agramonte met with Dr. Jorge Gómez Tapia and colleagues at the Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC) to review the progress on the organization of the upcoming IUGS Executive Committee (EC) Meeting, to be held in Bogotá, Colombia, starting on 21 January 2026.

Dr. Gómez Tapia has assigned two staff members (Juliana Avendaño and Tatiana Ramírez) who are fully dedicated to supporting the organization. Preparations are advancing with great professionalism, and all key logistics are well underway, including hotel arrangements, meals, meeting facilities at the SGC, a post-meeting field excursion, visitor recommendations, and local transportation.

Later that day, Prof. Rojas-Agramonte and Dr. Gómez Tapia met with Dr. Héctor Julio Fierro Morales, Director of the Servicio Geológico Colombiano, who confirmed the financial support of the Survey for the post-meeting excursion. The Director also expressed his intention to contact Ecopetrol to explore possible sponsorship opportunities for the event.

In parallel, the organizers are compiling a list of potential participants from the IUGS community, aligned with the main thematic priorities of the meeting: Medical Geology, Climate Change, Natural Hazards, Water Supply, Critical Raw Materials, and Renewable Energy.

The EC Meeting 2026 promises to be an excellent opportunity to strengthen international cooperation and highlight Colombia’s geological heritage and institutional leadership.
