- IUGS | History
History of the IUGS History The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) was founded in 1961, and formally admitted by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) on 28 September 1961. It took over activities that had previously been organized by the International Geological Congress (IGC) since its first meeting in 1878 in Paris: setting up international terminology and conventions, global correlation of specimens and strata, and coordination of mapping projects on a global scale. Since its founding, IUGS has experienced rapid growth in membership, scientific scope and expertise, setting up new task groups and commissions to address specific problems, and to endorse and exploit new methodologies such as AI. The IGCs, taking place every four years, are still an independent organizational body, but are closely linked to IUGS. - IUGS | Membership
Learn more on how to become an IUGS member and what benefits this brings. Membership IUGS Membership is open to all countries or defined regions. It is organised at the national level and in some places at regional level as approved by the IUGS Council. The IUGS Adhering Organizations are typically peak professional or government bodies such as Geological Societies, National Academies of Sciences, National Geoscience Committees, National Research Foundations, Geological Surveys or Ministries. The Adhering Members hold the proper authority from those individual countries or defined geographical regions. Active Adhering Members are represented by their nominated delegates that form the IUGS Council, which is the Union's governing body. F E E S & C A T E G O R I E S Adhering members pay an annual fee according to a financial contribution unit established by the Council. The Executive Committee adjusts it based on the inflation rate. The request for payment of the annual membership fee is usually sent out by the IUGS Treasurer in the first quarter of each year, after review by the Executive Committee. Membership fees are used to support research projects and related activities of various constituent groups (Commissions, Task Groups, Initiatives, Joint Programs of the Union) by funding applications to IUGS and IGCP. Additionally, the fees are used to support several awards, including the Hutchison Fund Travel Award, the Émile Argand Award, the James M. Harrison Award, the Early Career Award, and the Scientific Awards of Excellence. The journal is currently managed in South Korea. Books resulting from the work of IUGS bodies and from sessions held at International Geological Congresses. Since 2004 these books have been published under an agreement with the Geological Society of London (GSL). Significant results of IUGS scientific work also appear regularly in a wide variety of disciplinary journals and books published by scholarly professional societies and for-profit enterprises. From 1980 to 2001 IUGS produced its own numbered series of monographs. IUGS no longer prints, sells, or distributes monographic publications. A list of these volumes is maintained for historical purposes only.
